We are pleased to announce our first in-person event Challenges and Opportunities: Interplay Between Emerging Infectious Diseases and New Technologies for Detection and Protection, which will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the amphitheater of the Dr. Ramón Ruiz Arnau University Hospital at Bayamón, Puerto Rico from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This event will bring together experts in the fields of emerging infectious diseases and the latest technologies in vaccination, prevention, and clinical diagnostics.

Manuel Delgado Vélez, Ph.D.
Despite the monumental efforts made since the 1980s, there is still no vaccine against HIV. An HIV vaccine is needed to bring a true end to the HIV pandemic. This presentation will address the latest efforts and cellular and molecular strategies focused on developing an HIV vaccine.

Héctor J. Meléndez-González, MD
Dr. Meléndez-González will give an overview of the current epidemiology, medical, and public health responses to Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and the Oropouche virus. Mpox, once considered a geographically limited zoonotic disease, has seen a notable rise in cases globally, including Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, Oropouche virus, an under-recognized arbovirus prevalent in some parts of South America, poses significant public health risks with increasing outbreaks.

Dr. Martin-Ortiz will explore the latest advances in clinical diagnostic technologies for infectious diseases. Her talk will focus on current and emerging tools that enhance the accuracy and speed of pathogen detection. These innovations are transforming microbiology laboratories and shaping the future of infectious disease diagnostics.
