Dr. Luz V. Arroyo-Cruz is an assistant professor of Industrial Microbiology in the Department of Biology at the University of Puerto Rico-Arecibo Campus. She has dedicated her career to research and teaching in the field of industrial microbiology. Her main line of research focuses on the search and characterization of antibiotic-producing/resistant bacteria in the environment, as well as the industrial development of these compounds, contributing to scientific advancement and the training of future professionals on the island. Dr. Arroyo-Cruz’ commitment to the advancement of microbiology in Puerto Rico has been reflected in my participation in the Puerto Rico Society of Microbiologists (PRSM), where she has served as Secretary (2020-2021) and Vice-secretary (2021-2025). She was also selected as an American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Young Ambassador to Puerto Rico (2022-2023), promoting collaborations and opportunities for young researchers. As an active member of the PRSM and the ASM, Luz has participated in multiple initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration among researchers, students, and microbiology professionals. Motivated by the desire to continue contributing to the growth and projection of the PRSM, she will serve as Vice-secretary of the Executive Board 2025-2026. From this position, Luz seeks to foster effective communication among members, promote transparency in administrative processes, and strengthen institutional documentation. Her vision is to contribute to a more inclusive, dynamic society focused on the professional development of its members, ensuring that the voice of the Puerto Rican microbiological community is heard and valued both locally and internationally.
